Ban Heng @ Orchard Central

The only CNY meal I had in a chinese restaurant was for a meal with relatives. If given a choice, I probably would not opt for chinese food during CNY, much less a harried one in a crowded restaurant. Ban Heng at Orchard Central.

The first dish was delicious and changed my impression of Ban Heng, no more the shoddy sub par but pocket friendly CNY fare. Or so I thought. Anyhow, we tossed to prosperity, good health and luck!

Braised Fish Maw Soup with Dried Scallop and Crab Meat

Starchy broth with more fish maw than scallops or crabmeat but nobody is complaining since I was expecting more starch than ingredients.

Deep Fried Soon Hock Fish with Superior Soya Sauce

Too deep fried to even tell if the fish was fresh or not but I enjoyed this crispy delight.

Poached Live Prawns

Prawns were not exactly the freshest to begin with and I enjoyed the beer broth much better.

Braised Teochew Cabbage with Four Treasures and Black Moss

Bland, bland and so bland even when the vegetables were placed so nicely.

Braised Eefu Noodles with Chives

Yet another let down without any plating to speak of. Noodles were lacking in seasoning and were clearly overcooked.

Chilled Lemon Grass Jelly with Kiwi Fruit Seeds

Canned fruit and lemon grass jelly signaled the end of meal which I was more than thankful for.

Food was hinging on very terrible granted that it was festive and alot of allowance was made for subpar food, in fact there were hits yet somehow we all left hungry later that night.

I suppose somethings never change and Ban Heng still does not rank tops for favourite chinese restaurant.
